On leaving school Moira worked in Department of Health and Social Security until her first child was born. Her second child was born with Down’s syndrome. Moira didn’t work while her family of 5 were young but when her youngest started school she was asked if she could support a boy starting primary 1 in a nearby village. Moira realised how important it was to support children with learning difficulties in a mainstream environment and continued to do this job initially with Down’s syndrome children then mainly with children suffering from autism until her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She then became a learning mentor in a residential school for boys with severe emotional and behavioural problems as it was near her home and continued there until her retirement.
Moira’s daughter now has early onset Alzheimer’s and has recently moved to a care facility. Moira believes that due to her many caring rolls in both her personal and professional life she is qualified to be carer representative for Stirling
